IBS Medication

IBS or irritable bowel syndrome is a very common disorder that affects both men and women these days. There are so many recommended ibs medications that deal with the disorder. Sadly, there is no IBS medication that can effectively cure the disorder completely. Only the symptoms of the syndrome are alleviated, and not the syndrome itself.

The current ibs medications out in the market right now can give temporary relief to abdominal pain, diarrhea, and constipation. For the times when both diarrhea and constipation are experienced, there are also ibs medications to deal with these cases accordingly. Because the condition is chronic, its treatment can be long term, and would require changes in both diet and lifestyle. The typical complete treatment includes therapy as well.

When it comes to IBS related to constipation, there may be a need to take laxatives. But you have to be careful when taking laxatives because too much of these can also lead to diarrhea. Thus, you need to have your physician formulate the proper dosage for you. Taking too much can also be habit forming and would make your system immune to them in the long run. So, do take care when taking laxatives because they could end up becoming useless.

Aloe can also be effective in relieving the symptoms of IBS related to constipation. But do not take products containing aloe when you are experiencing diarrhea because this can worsen the condition immediately. But when you take in a product that contains the herb called slippery elm, this can actually be effective for both constipation and diarrhea symptoms of IBS. In fact, the usage of slippery elm has been going on for years now.

Where diarrhea is concerned, there are also medicines that you can purchase over the counter. Anti-diarrhea medicines include Kaopectate or Immodium. These products are indeed effective in reducing diarrhea; however, they are not effective in relieving other symptoms of IBS, such as bloating and abdominal pain. For abdominal pain, slippery elm and aloe are effective herbs to use. Bloating and heightened gas levels can also be relieved by taking in antacids and anti-gas medicines. Herbal remedies are also effective, but you have to refer to your physician before taking on such medication.

There may also be times when your physician would prescribe an anti-depressant to be included in your IBS medication. Depression can sometimes set in, especially when IBS is severe already. These are prescribed in low doses, to deal with the onset of depression accordingly.
